In the past few months, myself and a few General Committee members have been busy to prepare three proposals for SME Development Funds in order to implement studies which will benefit our trade and help our members. As invited by the Trade and Industry Department, we have prepared and submitted three applications for funding amongst the second tranche of applications by non-profit making organisation.

For your information, a summary of the projects proposed to be undertaken are as follows:

Project Project Title Project Summary
Project 1
Study on Assistance to SME Management Consultancies to Strengthen their Development in the Trade
This project serves as a follow up plan of a study conducted by the University of Hong Kong in October 1998, which confirmed the high priority of promoting management consultancy to improve Hong Kong's competitiveness. Through this project, we would like to (a) identify obstacles that remain to inhibit the industry growth of SME management consultancy, (b) develop plans to remove and overcome these obstacles and (c) ascertain ways to attract more SME management consultants to join the trade.
Project 2 Marketing Research Project to Promote Hong Kong's SME Management Consultancy Services in Hong Kong and to China The project is designed to increase SME management consultancy's market penetration in Hong Kong and China. And also speed up the industry development, which will in turn, increase competitiveness of a key sector of Hong Kong's economy. This project would perceived major consulting opportunities in Hong Kong and China, identify how SME can enter the market place, identify direct and indirect users of the service and strengthen SME consultants market-entry capabilities
Project 3 Study on Improvements of Professional Standards of SME Management Consultants with Recommended Action Plan The project is intended to raise SME consultants' skills on management consultancy. Study will be done to ensure what are the right skills that consultants should meet, and programs will be developed to assist SMEs to develop those skills.

We hope that the above three projects will receive the approval of the Trade and Industry Department and we shall advise you when we have more information on the progress.

Regards.

K K Yeung

Chairman
